Split Shared Expenses and See Who Should Pay Whom
This split expense calculator records who paid each group expense, divides that payment equally among the selected participants, and produces a settlement list. It is useful for meals, trips, groceries, rent, and other shared costs involving two or more people.
How the Bill Split Calculator Works
- Create a group and add each member with a unique name.
- Select the display currency.
- Add a payment with its payer, description, amount, and the members who shared that expense.
- Add further payments as needed.
- Review the settlement list to see who should pay whom.
Each payment is divided equally only among its selected recipients. This lets different expenses involve different subsets of the group, but the calculator does not accept custom percentages or custom amounts within one payment.
Settlement Method
For each payment:
Share per selected recipient = payment amount / number of selected recipients
The payer receives credit for the amount paid, while every selected recipient is charged one equal share. The calculator combines all payment balances and reduces them to a practical payer-to-payee settlement list.
Worked Group Example
Raj pays INR 3,000 for a shared expense involving Raj, Rahul, and Aman. The equal share is INR 3,000 / 3 = INR 1,000 per person. Raj has already paid INR 2,000 more than his own share, so the settlement is:
- Rahul pays Raj INR 1,000.
- Aman pays Raj INR 1,000.
If another payment involves only two group members, select only those two recipients and that payment will be split between them.
Currency, Rounding, and Saved History
The selected currency changes the symbol shown with results; it does not convert exchange rates. Payment inputs accept up to two decimal places, and displayed totals and settlements use two decimal places. Small residual differences can occur when an amount cannot be divided evenly, so agree how the group will handle the final minor unit.
The inspected calculator code saves up to ten groups in the current browser’s local storage only when you choose Save to History. Clearing browser data may remove that history, and anyone using the same browser profile may be able to view it.
Limitations
The calculator does not perform currency conversion, automatically add tax, tips, or discounts, or create unequal percentage shares within a single payment. Enter those values as part of the payment amount when appropriate and verify the settlement before transferring money.
